The purpose of this site is to introduce parents to student services and to explain some of the supports in place for students. As a bilingual learning assistance teacher, I provide pull-out programs in both English and French which assist students who are approaching/not meeting grade level expectations predominantly in the area of reading. An important component of my instruction is a home support program. This includes both a book to read and a group of high frequency sight words. The book is chosen on the basis of the student's instructional level; in other words, the level they have not yet mastered but read competently enough to practise and advance from. When the parent indicates their child can read the book selected by signing the record sheet, then a new book is sent home. The sight words are chosen from a list of high frequency words and are presented in the form of flash cards, normally in groups of ten but occasionaly in groups of five. When mastery is demonstrated to me, a new group to practise is sent home. It is, therefore, very important the home support duo-tang is kept in the agenda.
